Eating on a budget doesn’t mean you have to compromise on a balanced diet – these delicious recipes make perfect suppers using storecupboard staples and cheaper ingredients to keep food costs low.

The simple addition of onion, garlic or lemon as well as spices and fresh herbs can easily transform ingredients including pasta, gnocchi and rice – try this for yourself with our creamy broccoli gnocchi or our courgette lemon risotto.

We’ve used pork mince in our summer meatballs & spaghetti – with less calories and lower levels of saturated fat than its beef equivalent, pork offers an excellent source of protein, vitamins and minerals, including stress-busting B vitamins and energising iron. However, costly meat doesn’t always have to take centre stage – we’ve used just enough bacon to enhance the flavours in our springtime pasta.

We believe budget constraints shouldn’t stop you from experimenting with new ingredients or different flavour combinations. Our chargrilled vegetable tacos with smoky salsa delivers all five of your five-a-day, while the clever addition of kiwi makes for a sweet-tasting twist to the salsa. A cost-effective source of complete protein, tofu is a great flavour adopter and after a steaming bowl of our sticky tofu with noodles, it’s sure to be a regular on your shopping list.

When it’s getting to the end of the week and there’s not much left in the fridge our quick prawn curry makes the perfect saviour. Using just five ingredients you can enjoy a curry that’s low in salt and sugar and, best of all, on the table in as little as 10 minutes.
